Hardly a month goes by in Asia without a mass participation sporting event taking place somewhere in the region. Be it a two-kilometre fun run or a large-scale triathlon, the region is rife with new exciting initiatives that often attract visitors in the thousands.
Mass participation sporting events are all the rage in Asia, and it seems that everyone from agencies to governments and international brands got the memo. The calendar is full of mass participation sporting activities, many of which attract thousands of visitors from Asia and beyond. According to estimates from Nielsen Sports, Malaysia will host 185 mass participation events in the last three quarters of 2017, 57 in the Philippines, 49 in Indonesia, 41 in Singapore, and 11 in Hong Kong.
Several factors play a role in the popularity of mass participation sporting events, including rising incomes, lifestyle choices and the use of social media. Experts also point to the travel aspect of the industry; many combine their love of travel with mass participation sporting events, giving rise to sports tourism.
The recently held Mass Participation Asia in Bangkok is a reflection of the industry's growing popularity in the region. The event provided a platform for participants from all sectors of the mass participation sporting events industry to come together to foster collaborations and drive best practices. The event was attended by brands, rights holders and decision makers from all over Asia who spent two days discussing the latest trends in the industry, growing markets and opportunities, and insight and previous experiences of running mass participation sporting events.
Mass participation is also one of the main themes in the coming SPIA Asia – Asia's Sports Industry Awards and Conference 2017, which will take place in Bangkok's Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld on 6-7 November 2017. Created to celebrate the achievements made by the sporting industry in Asia, the event also features a conference titled “The Business of Sports – Asia’s Sports Industry in the Fast Lane III” where more than 300 delegates and 20 international speakers from many different industry sectors will provide valuable insights on mass participation, event management, sponsorship and sports tourism.
