The inaugural Smart Island Phuket Electric Vehicle Expo will take place at Central Floresta Phuket on 19-21 August. With transport being one of the island’s perpetuous hot topics, the event is set to create significant traction and public attention.
The focus of the expo is on the widespread use of EV technology in hotels, tourism and the broader population. Public transport on the island is relatively limited and a significant challenge to improving the island’s tourism infrastructure. The expo aims to create a forum for exploring solutions involving electric vehicles.
Sales of electric vehicles in Thailand in general are above forecast. According to the Bangkok Post, The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) issued a forecast that about 5,000 EVs would be on the roads this year. However, car makers at the recently held Bangkok International Motor Show sold 3,000 EVs at the event alone, which accounted for around 10 percent of total bookings at the event.
Tax cuts and subsidies have helped sales along. In 2017 only 200 EVs were sold but this year could see as many as 8,000-10,000, according to Surapong Paisitpatanapong, vice-chairman and spokesman for the FTI’s automotive club. However, he doesn’t believe that EVs will overtake conventional cars anytime soon due to the relatively low numbers of charging stations, especially outside of Bangkok.
The Smart Island Phuket Electric Vehicle Expo will tackle these issues and many more at the event in August.
