Attracting more than 7,000 athletes from Asia Pacific, Europe and the Americas, Laguna Phuket Marathon has grown to become the largest destination marathon in Southeast Asia, and the event regularly welcomes the world's running elite.
The first Laguna Phuket Marathon was held in 2005 in response to the 2004 tsunami to celebrate and support the island's fast recovery. The event was a showcase of the resilience of local communities and to this day continues to support the island's businesses during a period of the year when the island is typically quiet. Laguna Phuket Marathon has never been about breaking records – rather, participants return to the annual event to support the local communities and enjoy one of the most popular lifestyle sporting events in Asia. At the same time, it is a chance for runners to test their endurance on a beautiful-yet-challenging racecourse in one of the most famous destinations in the world, Phuket.
The three-day event offers a range of sporting and social events. In addition to the 42.2km international marathon and the 21.1km half marathon, which will both take place on 4 June, participants can sign up for a 10.5km run, a 5km run and a 2km kids' run, all on 3 June. There will also be parties, trophy presentations and an expo where local businesses and sponsors showcase their products and services.
Organised by Go Adventure Asia, the Laguna Phuket Marathon continues to support a number of local charities, and runners are encouraged to raise money for charity through the Laguna Phuket Foundation. Established in 2009, the foundation supports educational and social development of local communities, the conservation of marine and natural environments, and emergency relief. Its initiatives include the Developing Sustainable Schools Program, which consists of School Partnership Project, Survival Swim with Laguna Phuket, and Laguna Phuket’s “Fully Booked!” Mobile Learning Center. The foundation's environmental efforts are concentrated around the Sea Turtle Conservation Programme, which supports the conservation efforts by Phuket Marine Biological Centre.
