With more than 26,000 runners crossing the finishing line in 2015, Sundown Marathon, Singapore has fast become Asia's largest and most anticipated night marathon. The organisers are expecting as many as 30,000 registrations in 2016.
In places where day temperatures average around 30 degrees Celsius for most of the year, it makes sense to run at night. But then why do most races take place during the day? That was the question that started what has quickly become Asia's largest and most anticipated night marathon, the Sundown Marathon, Singapore. Since its inception in 2008, the race has become bigger and better and in 2016 the organisers expect as many as 30,000 people to register.
The first Sundown Marathon, Singapore in 2008 took place around an ultramarathon but over the years the focus has shifted from already experienced runners to those with less experience and runners can now register for 10 kilometres races, half-marathons and full marathons. In 2015, for the first time, the organisers also added the 5 kilometres fun run, aimed at children between six and 12 years and each year the event is supported by a variety of activities and services such as concerts, entertainment and food and beverage villages. For the first time in 2016, the Sundown Marathon, Singapore will feature the Race Village, a sports zone with adrenaline-pumping sports like dodge ball, basketball and rock climbing.
Sundown Marathon, Singapore is the city states’ first night race to be nominated twice for the prestigious International Sports Event Management (ISEM) Awards and Marketing Events Awards, for the Best Sport-Oriented Event, and the organisers have big plans for the event, which is being rolled out in Bangkok in late 2016 or early 2017 as well as Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam. The aim is to inspire participants to an active lifestyle while at the same time promote Asia's growing running industry.
