The world’s best club futsal teams are coming to Bangkok in late August and early September this year for the annual World Intercontinental Futsal Cup. With teams from five continents participating, it’s a truly international affair which is expected to attract thousands of spectators.
Futsal is a five-a-side version of football, typically played indoors on a hard court. Unlike other forms of indoor football, the court, which is smaller than a normal football field, is marked by lines – no walls or boards are used. It’s a fast-paced sport due to the smaller court and a smaller, harder ball combined with the hard court require exceptional control from the players.
The teams come from FIFA affiliated confederations from five continents, including AFC, UEFA, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF and CAF. Nine teams will be divided into three groups with three teams each. The three group winners and the second best team among the groups will advance to the semi-finals with games arranged so as to preserve as many continents in the play as possible. The winning team will receive a prize of US$50,000 with the runner up receiving US$20,000 and third and fourth place US$10,000. All other teams will receive US$2,000.
All matches will take place at Bangkok Futsal Arena, located in Non Chok district of Bangkok. With a capacity of 15,000 spectators and good infrastructure and connectivity, the matches are expected to attract a full house.
