Phuket will host the final of the world’s most prestigious amateur golf tournament this November. The World Amateur Golfers Championship World Final Phuket, Thailand 2023 (WAGC) will crown the best team and individual from over 40 participating countries.
Five teams are in the finals which mirrors a professional PGA tournament, with 72 holes played over the course of the finals, which takes place at four of Phuket’s best golf courses. Handicaps will be adjusted between each round and the overall tournament is designed to give amateur golfers the experience of representing their country in an international tournament.
The tournament begins as a national championship where winners from five handicap levels become national champions in their category. The 450 participants in the final are top business executives, global investors, celebrities, VIP guests and amateurs from all over the world.
Founded in 1995 by Sven Tumba, a prominent sports icon who represented Sweden in ice-hockey, soccer, and golf, WAGC is known for its celebrity endorsers and supporters, including Annika Sörenstam, Hon. Chairman of the Advisory Board; and Jesper Parnevik, Patron.
Taking place during the high season on Phuket where many golfers come to enjoy the beautiful climate and the island’s many renowned golf courses, WAGC is expected to draw thousands of visitors from Thailand and abroad. Golf tourism is an important tourism sector on Phuket and the tournament is expected to underscore the island as a premier golfing destination in Thailand and boost the local economy.
