Thailand to host a number of major sports events in 2021
Thailand, 2021

Taking a positive stance on 2021, Thailand is preparing to host a number of major sports events welcoming thousands of international athletes.

After a sluggish 2020, Thailand is taking a bullish stance on 2021 and setting its sights on a number of international sports events, hoping to attract international athletes, support staff and spectators.

Starting in January, Thailand has been chosen by the Badminton World Federation to host three major tournaments at IMPACT Muang Thong Thani. Yonex Thailand Open will take place from 12-17 January, while Toyota Thailand Open will be from 19-24 January, and HSBC BWF World Tour Finals from 27-31 January. The events have a combined budget of B320 million, which would be a welcome boost to the local economy.

According to Tourism and Sports Minister, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, every participant and support staff member in the tournaments will have to undergo quarantine in hotels or accommodation in stadiums before the tournaments begin. Due to COVID-19 prevention measures, the number of spectators will be capped at 5,000 down from the usual capacity of 10,000.

In May, Bangkok and Chonburi are scheduled to host the sixth edition of the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG), which is expected to boost the local economy with more than B1 billion and attract more than 9,000 athletes and support staff.

Later in the year, on 10-12 October, the 2021 MotoGP is expected to take place in Buriram with a budget of B300 million. The event was postponed from 2020 due to COVID-19. Thailand holds the license for the event until 2025, expecting to attract more than 1,000 international participants per event.

With a number of international sports events having been postponed from 2020, 2021 will also see the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, Southeast Asian Games and Asian Beach Games, with participation from Thai athletes in a number of disciplines.
