Bangkok successfully hosts SportAccord 2018
SportAccord 2018
Bangkok, 15-20 April 2018

Attracting sports leaders from all over the world, the 16th edition of SportAccord was an excellent opportunity to promote Bangkok as a world-class sports tourism and MICE destination.

The hosting of SportAccord 2018 was in line with the Ministry of Tourism and Sports’ strategy to develop the sporting industry in the country. One of the biggest and most comprehensive sports industry events, the six-day summit attracted sports industry leaders from all over the world to discuss the summit’s overarching theme “United a Global Audience: Marketing and Sponsorship for the Future”.

“Being the host of SportAccord 2018 is a great opportunity for Thailand to showcase its ability in organising the world’s biggest sports conference,” said Minister of Tourism and Sports, Weerasak Kowsurat. “This is also a perfect moment for us to express our potential to become an economic and social leader and an Asian transportation hub due to state-of-the-art infrastructures, international-quality venues and facilities that can support the staging of international sports conferences and other sporting events. As Minister of Tourism and Sports, I would like to say that Thailand is now ready to be an international hub for tourism and sports.”

As part of the organising committee, the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) hosted a booth showcasing the major events that support the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the SAT’s effort to promote Thailand as “Sports Dream Destination”. The SAT also hosted showcases of traditional Thai sports such as Muay Thai and Sepak Takraw, as well as Sport Festival Bangkok 2018, which is under the patronage of the IOC, and which promotes sport as a tool for cultural understanding. The event was aimed at encouraging grassroots sport in the country and establish closer relationships between the Thai national federations and their international federations, as well as promote and establish sports which do not yet have national federations in Thailand.

Delegates were also invited to experience unique elements of Thai culture through a series of events and excursions such as trips to Wat Po and the Grand Palace, trips on Chao Phraya river, a historical tour of Kanchanaburi, a Muay Thai show at Rajadamnern Stadium and visits to Thai spas and cooking courses.
