December 2017 / January 2018

We take a look back at some of the most exciting events of 2017
and get a taste of what 2018 has in store.

2017 has been another exciting year for the sponsorship industry in Asia. As we look back at some of the events that captured our attention in 2017, we also take a peek into what 2018 has in store.

The global sponsorship industry came off to a flying start in 2017, with more than 1,600 new sponsorship deals and over 400 renewals signed in the first five months of the year, according to the Sportcal Sponsorship Report. Published by Sportcal, the sports analysis provider, the report highlighted the continued importance of the role of sports sponsorships for brands wishing to reach an engaged audience.

In addition, the highly anticipated third edition of the Global Sports Impact (GSI) Report was published, shedding light on the who, the what and the how of global sporting events from 2013-2016. One of the highlights of the report was the rise of sports tourism and its impact on local communities, generating billions in revenue.

Sports tourism is also making an impact in Thailand, with local communities in places like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Pattaya and Phuket benefitting from local and international sporting events alike. In a series of articles over the coming months, The Sponsorship Experts will take a tour around Thailand, highlighting some of the events making positive contributions to local communities.

The growth of online video was also a hot topic in 2017, with the industry expected to grow at a 21 percent compound annual rate in Asia between 2017 and 2022, according to a report by independent consulting and research provider Media Partners Asia (MPA). The industry represents huge potential for sponsorships.

2017 has also been a successful year for The Sponsorship Experts. We helped clients, old and new, host successful events and raise tens of millions of baht in sponsorship deals. Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants returned to Thailand for the 2017 Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants where Gaggan once again claimed top spot. SPIA Asia 2017 - Asia's Sports Industry Awards and Conference was once again a massive success, and we are proud that a number of our clients, sponsors and partners received due recognition at the event.

As the year draws to a close we look forward to what 2018 has in store. On the sporting front, we have a number of exciting sponsorship opportunities, including Scenic Marathon Series, Kane Shepherd Racing, Tri-Factor Series Asian Championship, Bangkok International Rugby Tens, KhaoKheow10-Season3, Laguna Phuket Marathon and, once again, SPIA Asia - Asia's Sports Industry Awards and Conference. We are also proud to once again be appointed as Special Advisor to the Spots Authority of Thailand. On the cultural front, we look forward to supporting the inaugural Dawn Festival in Yangon, and to dance the night away at Caliente! Latin Music Festival Bangkok. The food and beverage industry shows no signs of slowing down, with several exciting events planned for 2018, including The Bar Awards and Phuket Food and Wine Expo. 2018 will also see a number of firsts, including TJ’s True South, Thailand’s first bid for the South Pole, Ice Arena Phuket, Phuket’s first ice rink, and PropertyGury Asia Property Awards. The year will also see the return of old-time favourites like the Kata Rocks Superyacht Rendezvous and Thailand and Singapore Yacht Shows. We are also excited to see what McLaren’s entry into Asia will mean for motorsports in the region. In Thailand, we continue to support Thailand Circuit - Nakonchaisri Motor Sports Complex.

Thank you once again to our clients, sponsors and partners. We wish you a prosperous 2018.
